A a single car accident left a woman trapped in a car for nearly half an hour. It was just after 12:30 a.m. when emergency crews were called out to the intersection of Horne and Kostoryz where the car ran into a traffic light. Two women were in the car at the time. Police say it appears the driver ran into the pole at high speed causing one of the traffic lights to fall. The impact was so severe, the whole front of the car was pushed in towards the cabin trapping the women inside. Crews were able to quickly extract the passenger but had to use the jaws of life to cut out the unconcious driver. It's a process the took nearly 30 minutes.

"The fire department had to use the jaws of life. They did a very good job," said Lt. David Blackman of the Corpus Christi Police Dept. "They took their time cutting everything away to get her out safely."

Both women were rushed to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital. The passenger was said to be in critical conditon. The driver in serious condition. Police say speed was definitely a factor in the crash and they are still investigating the possibility that alcohol was involved.

Corpus Christi City Budget

Corpus Christi city revenues aren't keeping up with the budget. What's the city to do? Cut expenses, raise taxes?

  • Small cuts in services and small tax rate hikes.
  • Drastic cuts in city services, no tax increases.
  • Reduce city employee salaries and benefits
  • Reduce all city services including pay cuts, and raise taxes
