84-Year Old Woman Fights Back Against Mugger

An 84-year old woman fought back when she was mugged while leaving a local HEB grocery store near Port.

Hortencia Martinez lives across the street from her disabled niece. She's lived in her neighborhood for the past 58 years, and thought it was a quiet and safe place.

When her niece needed a prescription from the nearby grocery store, Martinez was glad to get out of the house. She walked to the back of the HEB, where there is an opening in a privacy fence for her to pass through.

On her way back home, she got a nasty surprise as she approached the fence.

"When she got close to the opening, she put the basket to the side," Martinez said through a translator. "She got her purse, that's her little clutch, and she felt somebody tug at her. At her purse."

A man jumped out of what police say was a gray four-door Hyundai and grabbed her purse, but she wouldn't let go.

"So when she felt the tug, she turned around and said, 'Hey, that's my purse,'" Martinez said. "And she turned around and that's when she saw just the back of the guy, and he grabbed her purse and that's when she tried to tug with him."

Martinez's family has changed all of her locks and canceled credit cards to make her feel safe, but she said she will go back to the store alone if she has to.

"Just go out and work to get money, instead of stealing from the old and the helpless," Martinez said.

She is a brave lady, but she warns all her neighbors to be very careful when out walking alone in their neighborhood, no matter what time of day it is.

Police plan to release video of the mugging this week to help catch whoever may be responsible.
