A Dozen Arrests in San Patricio County Drug Roundup

At least a dozen people are in the San Patricio County Jail on drug charges, all from an undercover operation that began several months ago into cocaine sales in Mathis.

The San Patricio County Sheriff's Department began the operation in order to deal with cocaine that they say was being bought and sold in Mathis. Sheriff Leroy Moody said a lot of the drugs were ending up in the hands of school-aged kids, and that was not something he would let continue to happen.

"This is not the end of it, so if you think you're out there standing free, stand by," Moody said. "Your turn's coming."

For several months, three undercover officers began working to get into the cocaine business in Mathis. Several other officers ended up posing as drug buyers. The bulk of the investigation paid off on Tuesday, as sheriff's deputies rounded up about a dozen suspects.

There was a mother and daughter arrested, and even a set of twins among those now in the San Patricio County Jail.

Some neighbors living near the suspects, in the area where the drug roundup occurred, were willing to speak on camera.

"I don't deal, they don't deal with me, so I mind my own business," Sisto Hernandez said.

"I think they need to do more," Yolanda Adame said. "Get them off the street."

"What they need to do is take care of the streets at night more," Joe Gonzalez said. "You can stay here one night and see what's going on. They walk up and down the street looking for drugs."

Jose Pena's grandson, Mark Montez, was one of the people arrested in the drug roundup. When asked what he would do about his grandson being taken to jail, he responded, "That's his problem, not mine."

Montez lives on West Fulton with his grandfather. It's a street where neighbors say there is plenty of drug activity and theft -- one of the reasons Sheriff Moody is promising that the fight against drugs in Mathis is far from over.
