A man walking along the right shoulder of Highway 181 northbound is killed this morning after he is struck by a hit and run driver. Around 2:15am Saturday morning, numerous calls came into the police dispatch center about the injured man. When medics arrived, they rushed him to the hospital, where he later died. Lt. Chris McClure with the Corpus Christi Police Department tells 3 News that they few leads on the description of the vehicle that hit the man, so they are hoping the public can help them by calling authorities if they spot a vehicle with major front-end damage. Police say they also plan to talk to the people who called into 911 this morning to see any of them have a better description of the vehicle that fled the scene.
During the hit and run investigation, traffic was diverted away from the scene. That's when an 18 wheeler, attempting to make a u-turn underneath the causeway, ended up hitting the bridge. Police say his load was about one-foot too short. The impact of the hit caused the big rig's load to buckle, and the back of his truck crumpled like an accordion. Police say the bridge was not damaged, and the driver was not hurt. He will also not be ticketed.
