Investigators are on the scene of a fire at an abandoned hospital in Alice. Flames broke out on the first floor of the structure at 2nd and Reynolds around 2:30 this morning. Fire crews say because of the size and hazards in the building they could not go into the blaze until sufficient back-up arrived. First responders from 10 surrounding areas were called to assist, including Corpus Christi, Beeville, and Kingsville. Alice Fire Chief Dean Van Nest says the additional help was crucial.
"This is the best part of this job when you have friends who will come and help you in your time of need," said Chief Van Nest. "So you know, this is the important part of what the fire service is about."
Once firefighters made entry, the flames were out in about 15 minutes, however that was two hours after the fire initially started. No one was injured.
