AEP Foundation Donates to Restoration of Fulton Mansion

The American Electric Power Foundation made a big donation Wednesday that will go toward restoration efforts to preserve a piece of South Texas history.

The Foundation presented a $75,000 check to the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission to help in the restoration of the Fulton Mansion State Historic Site. The 137-year old structure sits on the Aransas Bay in Rockport-Fulton.

The mansion is currently receiving a $3.4 million facelift. It was built by entrepreneur George Fulton in 1877, and currently serves as an education resource for students.

"It reminds us about where we came from," said Marsha Hendrix of the Fulton Mansion State Historic Site. "This was kind of a rough and tumble area. With the cattle industry, lots of people moved down here and our area grew as a result of it."

The group hopes to reopen the site in early 2015.
