After serving the Alice Police Department for just over a year, Chief Randy Weems submitted his official letter of resignation to the Mayor of Alice at around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Weems, who has had a 27-year career in law enforcement, was unanimously approved by Alice City Council as their chief of police on Feb. 7, 2013. He started the job on Feb. 18, and said his top priority would be to address gang problems in Alice.
Other than confirming that he had resigned, Weems declined to comment on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Alice Mayor Larry Martinez said Weems' resignation came as a surprise to him and that he hates to see Weems leave. He wishes him the best of luck.
3News also confirmed that Weems was notified Tuesday afternoon by the interim city manager that his resignation will be effective immediately.
Before serving in the Alice Police Department, Weems was chief deputy in the Navajo County Sheriff's Office in Arizona.
