Alleged Teague Lane Shooter Commits Suicide During Standoff

A man who allegedly shot and killed a Calallen man at around 6:30 a.m. Friday was tracked by authorities to a ranch in Benavides hours later and killed himself during a standoff. Now, the families of the two men are left wondering why it happened.

"A witness inside the house, a 41-year old female, told officers that the male came in the back door and shot the other male in the head with the handgun," said Captain Mark Harrod of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

The gunshot woke neighbors at the Rock Canyon town homes in the 13000 block of Teague Lane in Calallen. Police arrived at the scene within minutes and found 44-year old Lanny Gonzalez. He had been shot once in the head.

The suspect, identified as 41-year old Joseph Carrillo, left the scene in a blue sport utility vehicle. Carrillo's wife told investigators that he was probably heading back to the family ranch in Benavides, where their two children, a 16-year old girl and an 11-year old boy, were.

Police contacted the Duval County Sheriff's Office who then responded to the ranch outside of San Diego, on Highway 359. The two children were safely taken from the scene while Carrillo held himself up.

State troopers, deputies from the Duval County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Border Patrol agents attempted to communicate with Carrillo, but that was when a single gunshot was heard. Investigators discovered Carrillo's body with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
