Annual New Year's Ride Held in Honor of Late Motorcyclist

It is a local motorcycle ride that began years ago as a unique way to usher in the new year, but the man who started it died in 2000. Ever since, the event continued as a memorial to him.

That ride was held again on Tuesday. Friends of the late Jimmy Carlock say every New Year's he would call them, and they had to join him in a ride around the bay. That was his thing, and if you were a friend of his, it didn't matter how you felt or what the weather was like. You had to do it.

The ride would go on, rain or shine, and that certainly was the case on Tuesday, when the weather was less than great. Still, starting around noon, folks began showing up at Rascal's Billiards & Sports Bar for the annual memorial ride that honors the memory of Jimmy Carlock.

Carlock was 54 years old when he died in a motorcycle accident in May of 2000. Since then, his friends have continued the tradition of the New Year's Day ride.

"I think it's a really awesome thing that, you know, his friends have done, and it means a lot to us," said Tiffany Carlock, Jimmy's daughter. "It makes our heart happy that my dad touched so many people's lives, and these people, his friends, have continued on with this memory of him."

"He is a very well known man. A very large heart," said Tammy Carlock, Jimmy's daughter. "It just keeps him alive, you know, and it helps us keep him alive."

"Jimmy meant a whole lot to a whole lot of people," ride organizer Rick Rister said. "He was very well liked, all around the town, and very well respected. Him and his family both. And we just, we miss Jimmy, and we just like to keep it going."

Organizers of the bike run said that, while it was originally started in honor of Jimmy Carlock specifically, over the years it has become a way to honor others that have died as well.

On years when the weather is nicer, like last year, as many as 300 people have taken part in the ride.
