SAN DIEGO--A teacher at San Diego's junior high school has been suspended pending an investigation after being accused of telling one student to hit another child in class. The parents of the alleged victim contend a teacher told the student to hit the child. They claim the accused student is the son of the school superintendent.

Just after Kiii News began investigating this story, we found out the teacher in question was suspended with pay.

Glenda Gonzalez said a teacher ordered the son of the superintendent to hit her child at Bernada Jaime Junior High School in San Diego on Tuesday morning. She said Sonia Carrera, a reading teacher, did this because her 12-year-old son, Travis Gonzalez, was acting up in class.

"The parents entrust the teachers to provide a safe environment for our children and she just allowed it to happen and I'm very angry," said Gonzalez.

After the incident occurred in the second period class, the child, Travis Gonzalez,  asked an administrator if he could call his mother to tell her what happened, but his family says he was told he could not.  Glenda Gonzalez says she didn't know about the alleged incident until six hours later when he got out of school around 3:30 pm.

Gonzalez said her son suffers from attention deficit hyper disorder and has had some problems this year with talking in class. She says she has spoken to the teachers about his condition and advised them to call her if they had any problems

Gonzalez said Carrera is the wife of the district's athletic director. She alleges that Carrera told the son of  Superintendent Luis Pizzini to do hit her son.

"I believe that the teacher used that student knowing of his dad's position and she used and felt nothing was going to be done to her," Gonzalez said.

We questioned the school superintendent about reported incident. Pizzini refused to comment on camera, but he did say the teacher has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation.

Pizzini released this statement:  "The situation is pending investigation. We are not drawing any conclusions at this time. The district has taken the precaution of separating the teacher from the students."

Gonzalez has filed a police report.

"I just want for the right thing to be done and it's my opinion that she be terminated," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez plans to go to the school board meeting later this month to state her case.

I'm a mom to one of Pizzini's ex-student and just want to say by what I've heard, Pizzini would have been the first to suspend the child who committed the assault, but of couse, he being friend to Bueno, the principal, Zac will not be disciplined. Regardless of who told me to do it, he slapped the other boy, so he should be disciplined and taken necessary action. If the teacher told him to jump in the creek, would he do it? The victim has an illness and the parent can take higher up action.

What is going on in our schools? This incident where a teacher asked a student to "slap" another is outrageous! And, to make matters worst, if those involved were not disciplined then what lesson are we teaching our kids? Administration needs to ensure that this delicate matter is settled fairly and the message sent to the public is that "all is well" at SDISD. Will they be able to set this straight?

It is certainly a very sad day when we begin to doubt our educational institutions. The incident that involved, not only a student slapping another but a teacher who played a major role makes for one of our darkest days in educational history. This only points to the need for parents to become more involved; for administrators to be more vigilent; for teachers to be better prepared and more focused on instruction. They after all are the ones who have the most impact on our youth.

The person/s who wrote that Ms. Carrerra taught in Three Rivers and that she had "incidents" is not telling the truth. Ms. Carrerra wasn't "too friendly" with the students. If anything, she was "too caring" for the students who are unteachable...and yes, some students ARE unteachable. Remember - one persons rights END when they interfere with the rights of another;such as a student not being able to learn because another student constantly talks and disrupts the teachers teaching efforts.

First of all this parent obviously isn't that involved with her child, because if she was then she would have known that Mrs. Carrera isn't her son's reading teacher she is a math teacher. So this says alot about what kind of parent we are dealing with. She should get her facts straight. This teacher would never put any child in danger. And as for the person who wrote from Three Rivers get ur story straight she was teaching in San Diego last year not Three Rivers.

To begin with, the student that was slapped should have been sent to the office immediately if he was misbehaving. The student that slapped him should have been reported to the local authorities no matter who he's related too and he should be charged with a class C assault at the least. If it's true that the teacher asked a student to behave by assaulting another, he should too be charged criminally, fired and not allowed to teach ever again. This isn't what teachers are paid to teach, violence.

It's amazing to watch what some parents will do to get attention and have their face plastered on the news. This parent should put the same kind of effort towards controlling her uncontrollable son so he doesn't go around disrupting other kids who go to school to learn. This is all so ----.

The idea that the teacher is close friends to certain students bothers me. Does she then treat students differently depending on how close they are to her?

REGUARDLESS, THIS TEACHER SHOULD BE MORE PROFESSIONAL AND NOT EVEN DO THIS, WHAT DOES SHE GET PAID FOR, TEACH AND MAKE SURE STUDENTS DO NOT ACT UP. AS FOR ZAK, HE WILL NOT BE PUNISHED, AS SO HIS DAD HAS DONE SO MANY DISGUSTING THINGS AND NOT EVEN A SLAP ON HIS FACE

Hitting or slapping another student is wrong and can be very humiliating. It doesn't matter what the 6th grade student was doing. He shouldn't have been slapped by another student. What happened to the positive and safe environment our children deserve. What happened to a learning environment where children are on task. They should have had something better to do in that class. It seems that there is too much negative consequences in that school. This is a situation where everybody loses.

Do you really believe that a teacher actually "ordered" another student (the superintendent's son, none the less) to go strike another child, and then that child actually went with the intent of really striking that child and actually did so? Any reasonable person would have to think there was more to this story than the way it is being presented.Everyone knows that teenagers (especially ones that tend to get in trouble often)have on occasion been know to stretch the truth, right?

Remember that there are 2 sides to every story. In these types of situations, only 1 side is allowed to talk. Everyone associated with the school is required to NOT talk due to due to "pending investigation". Therefore the accused often isn't allowed to give their side to the media. So, one side hits the media, everyone draws conclusions based on 1 side of a story & because of this, an allegation, even unfounded, or taken out of context can destroy a career.

Mrs. Carrera taught in Three Rivers, Tx last year, none of the teachers liked her because she was too friendly with the students. I believe she did ask a student to hit another student because she thinks she is above the law. I hope this time something is done about her. She got away with several incidents in the TR school. It is about time she was taught a lesson, no one is above the law. Not even Sonia Carrera.

Ms. Carrera teaches her students in a positive caring manner. The attempt to deal with Travis'outbursts in a light humorous manner backfired, but there are two sides to every story. The other child involved is an extremely pleasant, well behaved boy that most SD parents are proud of and would welcome into their homes anytime. Other student's were present and tell a much different version than what you've published. Perhaps you should investigate further. Ms Carrera cares about these kids!

I believe the students should have been reading or working in class when this incident happened....or were they allowed free time? Where was the teacher? She should have been doing her job: TEACHING! Obviously she was not! But there is always two sides to a story. In my opinion, both students should be punished, despite who they are related to.

the teacher was not the one that hit the child. Its all hearsay. I do not believe the teacher should be punished. Parents can never take responsibility for their childs' actions. They always want to point the finger at someone else. Be a responsible parent. Try and realize and what is right before your eyes.

Sometimes teachers are taken for granted and are always blamed for incidents that children are in. What we need to understand is that the seed is planted at home. People are always willing to accuse rather than to take blame for what their child is doing or has done. Its hard to be a teacher now a days, especially when you can blame everthing on medical conditions rather than actual bad parenting skills. There are classes available for those that need to freshen up on Parenting Skills.
