DRISCOLL-Driscoll town leaders are looking for a top cop after the police chief walked off the job. It's the third time in the last year that the chief has left.
The town of Driscoll used to be filled with controversy. Now that controversy is gone, but lately, they can't seem to keep a police chief or officers.
In this surveillance video in Driscoll from a convenience store, this dramatic video shows how a Coastal Bend driver ran a red light on Monday, hitting a big rig truck and then it spins near some gas pumps. Nobody called the paramedics for 15 minutes until constable officers got there from Bishop because the one officer was off for the day.
"There's plenty of people who could have made that call, but it definitely would have been advantageous if they had somebody working if they had somebody working or a couple of more officers working," said Nueces County Precinct 3 Constable Jimmy Rivera,
The constables office covers 185 square miles in southwest Nueces County. This is the third time in the last year, officers have had to help patrol in Driscoll because the town has no chief.
"So we're stretched thin having to cover the entire area," Constable Rivera said.
The latest casualty was Chief Roy Mendez who walked off the job, accusing city leaders of mismanagement and pushing a quota for tickets.
"I do know that this administration will not and has not given quotas to our police officers," said Sandra Martinez, the Driscoll City Administrator.
The town said they are looking for the right police chief to lead the three person department.
"It would be nice like every other city to have a lot of officers on patrol but like I said this is a small town," said Laura Sanchez, a Driscoll resident.
