ARANSAS PASS--Aransas Pass city leaders have taken another step to expand the city. They'll soon vote to annex a three-an- half mile stretch near Business 35 in Aransas County.

Aransas Pass leaders have talked about this annexation for years. Over the last year, some residents have opposed it, but those plans may become a reality in two weeks.

City By The Sea, La Buena Vida and Bahia Bay residents may soon become annexed by the city of Aransas Pass. It's a three-and-half mile stretch just north of the city and will include 434 homes.

"Like most of the other retired people, we can't afford to live here anymore," said Walter Henshue, who has lived in City By the Sea for 15 years.

If the annexation plan passes, the Aransas County residents will have no choice, but to become a part of the city. They'll have to pay higher taxes, estimated at nearly $2,000 more a year.

"They're going to drive you out just so they can make more money to fix up all their boo boos that they have there in their town," Henshue said.

Others are upset about the emergency services. They believe Aransas County provides better police, fire and e-m-s protection than the city of Aransas Pass.

"The service would deteroriate quite rapidly and we have a lot of people who need those services," said Jim Rummage, who is a concerned City By the Sea resident.

City leaders said the annexation plan is not all about money:

"The city is looking to grow and it's been discussed for many years to grow out to the north and that's the way it's going to go," said Reggie Winters, the Arnansas Pass City Manager.

Aransas Pass city leaders will vote on the annexation plan in about two weeks.

Ohh please, this has nothing to do with the taxes being raised, they are spending more money fighting this using billboards, signs, etc. Calling my town "Crack Capital" is slanderous, if it wasnt for my anscestors, yall wouldnt have your waterfront homes. You think the RVFD can beat APs full time firefighters? Its already been proven, so your argument is void. It all comes down to not wanting to be apart of the AP community. Time for you Yankees to leave.

City by the Sea would make a great addition to AP. Although I would rather Rockport be the ones to annex them.

i like how the old guy in CBTS cried about not being able to afford taxes while he lives in a $300k house. the AP emergency is way better then what is provided already, the current provider already burnt down a house in CBTS. i agree with magoo and ms jackson if you dont like it move to CBTS oh wait you live in the so called "poverty town" so im sure you couldnt afford taxes either, although there are a lot of towns that would be happy to take your negitave attitude.

Aransas Pass is a fine city. Like ANY town it has its problems, but in response to AM lala the majority of AP citizens are not dirty nasty or poverty stricken. Must of the residence are nice honest hard working families that are doing the best they can for their children and we are proud of our little town and happy to call Aransas Pass our home!!!!

If City by the Sea doesn't like it. It's easy to fix. City by the Sea needs to InCorporate into their own City. Call it anything you want! If you don't want to be swallowed, then BECOME A CITY YOURSELVES! You could call yourselves SpeedTrap, Texas!!!

A better route would be for the city to become a municipal utility district. Turn all non-utility services over to the county-- streets, police and fire protection, emergency services, etc. City taxes would be replaced by a modest MUD tax while county taxes would increase. This would mean a significant tax reduction for AP residents.

The City of Aransas Pass is unable to provide for what area they have. There are streets in AP that you can hardly traverse. Law enforcement is below par, as well. Sounds as if the City Manager is not unlike an ex councilman. Like it or not they're going to annex.

Those people come into AP and use the streets, city services, library, demand city water but do they pay their fair share? No. They expect that 2 deputy sheriff's department to protect them or the "better late than never volunteers.....well,.... If they want to use it, pay for it like the rest of us.

This is a dirty rotten deal for City By the Sea and others, Aransas Pass can't take care of their own city utilities, emerg. and fire depts, I know I live here.
