Barbecue Benefit to be Held for Downtown Assault Victim

The Annaville community is being called on to help out the family of Erik Schwirtlich, the young victim of a brutal assault in downtown Corpus Christi.

A young man named Victor Perez has been charged with the assault and awaiting trial. As for Schwirtlich, he ended up in the hospital and had to have brain surgery.

Schwirtlich's family said he is having to undergo therapy on how to walk and talk again. That is going to turn out to be a real expensive medical bill, so the Office Club on Rand Morgan and Leopard has agreed to host a huge fundraiser on Saturday, beginning at noon.

Julie Wynn is a bartender at the business, and said that Schwirtlich was a regular customer, and the Office Club wanted to do something to help out.

"Erik has the biggest heart," Wynn said. "Sweetest guy in the world. It's horrible that it happened to him, of all people. He was in here that night and having a good time. We enjoy him so much, and for something like this to happen to him, it was horrible. It was totally unnecessary."

The benefit will be at noon on Saturday at the Office Club, located at 2422 Rand Morgan Road. There will be a car show and a silent auction. $8 barbeque plates will be available, as well as $20 t-shirts.

All proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Schwirtlich family's medical expenses.
