Bee County Commissioners No Longer Overseeing Head Start Program

Bee County Commissioners have been in control of their local Head Start program for the past 30 years, but now they have voted to part ways with the federal pre-school education program.

They have also been in charge of the Head Start programs in Live Oak, Goliad and Refugio counties, but they say they can no longer afford to pay 20-percent of the costs, which is what they were responsible for.

So as of midnight on June 4, the county will no longer oversee the program.

"And when you add all the figures together, you're looking at right at a million, maybe a little over a million," Bee County Judge David Silva said. "We had to do something, and it's not an easy decision."

The local Head Start director said it is unclear what impact that change will have on local programs and their staffs.
