Beeville ISD Says Safety Plan was Submitted, Despite State Claim

The Beeville Independent School District says it wants to assure the community that it did submit a school safety plan to the state, but made a mistake when submitting online.

Superintendent Sue Thomas showed a 2011 district audit report from the Texas School Safety Center, which contains the findings on safety and security. Thomas said the district does have a safety plan, but that when it was submitted, someone made a mistake in answering a question, and that then rendered the district non-compliant.

However, Thomas says no one from the School Safety Center ever told the district they had made a mistake.

"Why didn't somebody email me or call and say, 'Hey, you just submitted an audit that says you're a school and you didn't audit any schools?' Why didn't somebody call and say, 'Something's wrong with your report?'" Thomas said. "I'm going to say, I'm going to tell you what he said. He said we don't have time to read the audits."

The Texas School Safety Center did not return calls on Tuesday.
