Benefit Event Planned for Injured Firefighter

Firefighters are hoping to raise enough money to help one of their own be able to get back on his feet after a fire landed him in a San Antonio burn center.

Last week, Battalion Chief J.D. Johnson suffered severe burns after the roof of a burning building in Robstown collapsed. The chief was not fighting the fire at the time. Instead, he was basically in charge of the firefighting effort, but suddenly he was hit by a 15-foot blast of red-hot flames that shot from the collapsing building.

One firefighter told us that Johnson suffered third-degree burns on his hands and second-degree burns on his face and chest. Family members have been at his side since the incident, and firefighters here are wanting to help defray their expenses by holding a fitness benefit at CrossFit Metro 361.

"We came up with this workout. It's actually a very symbolic workout," firefighter Lonnie Loosemore said. "There's going to be three rounds which symbolize the three shifts of our fire department. There's five exercises which symbolize the five different positions Chief Johnson has held in our department, and 17 reps which represent the number of stations we have in our fire department."

The benefit will be held at 9 a.m. next Wednesday at CrossFit Metro 361 on South Water Street.

Firemen are hoping to raise as much money as they can for Johnson and his family, so everyone is invited to show up on Wednesday and bring by a donation.
