Bereaved Mother Seeks Help Paying for Her Son's Burial

After her son succumbed to injuries caused by an accident, a local mother is going to great lengths to give her son a proper goodbye.

Dessie Smith has been going to corner of Everhart and SPID to ask for help since her son, Billy Fretwell, died last Friday. He had been in hospice for quiet some time. He was hit by a car while crossing a street in San Antonio on May 7 of last year.

Now, with her son's passing, she wants to lay him to rest, but she can't afford it on her fixed income.

"It's pretty hard because I have four kids, and this is the only one that I lost, and I wasn't prepared to bury him, you know?" Smith said. "I just wasn't prepared."

So Smith has been standing at the corner of Everhart and SPID daily, hoping for the generosity of strangers. She has been getting donations, but hasn't received nearly as much as she needs.

"I'm out here everyday, trying to make $600, and it just isn't happening," Smith said. "And I only live on a fixed income, you know.? $510 a month doesn't go far."

Smith said she watched her son wither away before her eyes, and that when he died, she had nowhere else to turn to for help.

"I don't know how to do this, you know? I've never had to bury my children. I've never had to stand on a corner just to get money to bury him," Smith said. "I don't know how to do all that, but I'm trying."

Smith said she has raised about $200 over the last three days.

If you would like to help Smith raise money to bury her son, an account has been set up at First Convenience Bank under the name "Stephen Butts c/o Billy Fretwell." The account number is #441313491.
