Big Rig Causes Grass Fires on I-37, Callicoatte

A lack of wind on Tuesday actually helped prevent several spot grass fires that ignited just after 4 p.m., at I-37 and Callicoatte, from erupting into something huge.

Investigators said an 18-wheeler was to blame. It turns out, its brakes locked up, causing sparks to fly, which then set off a series of small grass fires that charred up about a mile and a half of land.

"We had a little bit of concern here to your right, where it was getting kind of close to some houses," said Deputy Fire Chief Marshal Tong of the Annaville Fire Department. "But we got it stopped and mitigated before it could get any further."

About six different crews responded to the fires. They were put under control in about 30 minutes.
