Bodies of Couple Missing Since Sunday Found in Lake Corpus Christi

The bodies of a man and women who went missing Sunday evening in the Point Loma area of Lake Corpus Christi were both recovered by search teams Monday morning.

The body of Ronni Jean Renfro, 30, was pulled from the waters of Lake Corpus Christi at around 11:30 a.m. Monday. About an hour later, the body of 31-year old Marshall Shambo was found.

Kiii News Anchor Rudy Trevino spent the better part of the day Monday with the couple's family members.

According to family members, the couple went missing sometime after 2 p.m. Sunday when their boat broke down about 200 feet from where they lived. The couple's four-year old daughter and seven-year old son were in the boat with them, both wearing life jackets.

Family members said that the four-year old Avery needed to use the bathroom, so the couple let her get in the water with her life jacket on. She started drifting, however, and that's when Renfro and Shambo jumped in the water after her. Seven-year old Jacob tried to jump in as well, but they made him get back inside the boat.

Soon after that is when Jacob noticed that his father and Renfro were nowhere to be seen. He waved down some jet skiers in the area, who recovered the children and took them to shore.

Search parties scoured the waters until around 7 p.m. Sunday, and began their search again at around 8 a.m. Monday.

A San Patricio Justice of the Peace told family members Monday that the incident was a tragic accident. Funeral services for the couple are still pending.

An estimated 500 people drown each year in the U.S. due to recreational boating accidents, many of which could have been prevented if the person had been wearing a life jacket.

Game wardens are stressing the importance of taking those kinds of precautions before going out on the water.

When you are at the beach, you have to be concerned about the rip current, but out on a lake, there are number of other factors to be aware of that could lead to drowning.

Kiii News Reporter Bill Churchwell went Live from Lake Corpus Christi, where the tragic accident happened, with some boating safety tips.
