Border Patrol Agents Rescue Illegal Immigrant Drowning in Rio Grande

U.S. Border Patrol agents rescued an illegal immigrant who was struggling to stay afloat while fleeing across the Rio Grande early Tuesday morning.

According to Border Patrol agents at the Weslaco station, two illegal immigrants were spotted near the river. They both attempted to avoid the agents by fleeing across the Rio Grande toward Mexico. One made it across the river, but the other was struggling to swim near the U.S. Riverbank.

Agents quickly called for an ambulance and threw the man a life jacket, pulling him ashore as quickly as possible. They provided first aid while waiting for aid to arrive.

The illegal immigrant was determined to be from El Salvador, and agents said he was extremely cold and fatigued. EMT certified agents arrived at the scene and provided medical attention. The man was taken to a hospital in McAllen for further treatment.
