Brooks County ISD Bus Involved in Accident on FM 2191

A Brooks County Independent School District bus was involved in a major traffic accident at around 7:15 a.m. Friday along FM 2191 near County Road 215.

First responders said a pickup truck crashed into the bus and the driver, 19-year old Danny Perez of Falfurrias, was pinned underneath it for a short time. Emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate Perez from the truck.

Perez was rushed to Christus Spohn Hospital Alice by ambulance with broken bones and fractured legs and arms. He was treated in the emergency room and released.

Four students were on the bus at the time of the accident. They were taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Alice as a precaution.

Perez was cited for unsafe speeds and having no driver's license. The driver of the school bus, 66-year old Homero Benavides of Falfurrias, was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

The Department of Public Safety has not made a specific determination as to which driver caused the accident, but said that both drivers made some faults.

Authorities say that fog may have been a factor in the crash.
