CCISD Grant for 21st Century After-School Program Runs Out

The Corpus Christi Independent School District is losing one of its staple after-school programs -- the 21st Century program.

The program is mainly catered to elementary and middle school students, providing them with help with homework as well as recreational activities and lessons in art and culture.

The program runs on a five-year grant. This cycle, the Texas Education Agency only handed out 18 grants, despite receiving more than 120 applicants.

"Parents knew for those hours that the kids stayed at school, that there was structured activities for the students, rather than walking home and not being accompanied by anyone safe, or going home to an empty house," said Yvonne Colmenero, Executive Director of Special Programs at CCISD. "The students had structured activities for them at school."

The CCISD does plan to apply for the grant again next time it becomes available.
