CORPUS CHRISTI (Islanders Athletics) - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team tallied its seventh 10-plus hitting game, while clinching its seventh Southland Conference victory of the season Friday over Southeastern Louisiana 4-0 at Chapman Field.
The Islanders (11-14, 7-4) scored one run in the first, two in the second before adding one in the sixth to seal their third consecutive victory and third shutout of the season. Freshman Mickayla Heller powered the Islanders offense, collecting her second perfect hitting game of the season. Senior Hannah Schwarz went 2-for-3 and senior Cassie Redman chipped in two hits at four at-bats to contribute to the Islanders bats.
Southeastern Louisiana (7-27, 1-8) dropped its eighth conference game of the season, while dropping its eighth straight game to the Islanders and fourth consecutive at Chapman Field.
Greta Cecchetti (6-3) picked up her fifth consecutive win in the circle and third shutout victory of the season. She limited the Lady Lions to just three hits while retiring six and walking four in seven innings.
The Islanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame with three hits. Redman started things off with a single to right field and advanced to second on a Lady Lion throwing error. Schwarz advanced Redman to third on a sacrifice bunt before Schumann brought Redman home on an RBI single to left field. The Lady Lions were able to escape the inning with Sandy Schumann on third and McKinney on second after she reached on a single.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi tacked on two more runs in the second inning on two hits. With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Heller ripped a single up the middle and Redman tallied her second hit of the game with a single in front of the Lady Lions pitcher Vicki Honeycutt. Redman and Heller padded the Islanders lead to 3-0 after both plated runs on a Lady Lions' throwing error on a Schwarz at-bat.
The Lady Lions left two runs on base in the fifth inning after registering one hit. Kelsey Nichols started the inning with a single to Stephanie Vead in right field before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lauren Coniglio reached on a walk and Michelle Duhe reached on a fielder's choice. However, the Islanders were able to escape the inning with two groundout plays.
The Islanders extended the lead in the sixth inning with another run on three hits. Hayley Galloway singled up the middle with one out before Heller collected her third single of the game with a hit to left field. Schwarz followed with an RBI hit to score Galloway.
Kati Morse (2-4) took the loss for the Lady Lions after allowing three hits and one run in the first inning.
