CORPUS CHRISTI (Islanders Athletics) - Senior Jessica Jammer tallied a season-high 16 points and the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (1-9) women's basketball team clinched its first victory of the season, 52-49, over Cornell (5-4) Tuesday night at theAmerican Bank Center. The Islanders received balanced scoring from eight players and powered the glass 36-30 to help seal head coach Royce Chadwick's first victory at the helm since taking over the program in April.
"We made shots that we have been missing," Chadwick said. "Tonight we were getting good shots and we were able to finish them. It makes a difference when you have the attack the basket and finish mentality. We did a good job defensively and we did a good job of getting them off the boards. We really contested all their three's and stopped them."
Jammer also chipped in eight rebounds and a career-high six steals and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. The Islanders had a strong outing from Alisa Roberts who registered nine points and a season-high eight rebounds.Verne'qua Taylor dished out six assists while Ashanti Plummer and Morgan Schwartz each collected six points apiece. The Islanders shot 40.4 percent from the field and 72.7 percent from the charity stripe to help snap a 10-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Cornell was powered by Clare Fitzpatrick's 18 points and 12 rebounds and Allyson DiMagno added 17 points and eight rebounds.
The Big Red opened the game on a 10-2 run before the Islanders knotted the score at 15 with 11 minutes to play in the half. The Islanders followed with a 12-0 run which included five different Islanders tallying buckets to push ahead 23-15. During the run, Roberts, Schwartz, Plummer, Janae Blount and Trish Amboree all tallied points. The Islanders took their biggest lead of the game at the 1:24 mark on an 18-2 mark to pad the lead to 12.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi ended the half on a 20-7 run to head into the locker room with a 31-22 advantage. It marked the third time this season the Islanders went into the half ahead of their opponents.
Jammer paced the Islanders with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting and Plummer chipped in six on 3-of-3 shooting from the field. Taylor dished out five assists along with her four points and four rebounds. The Islanders grabbed the 21-17 edge on the boards and scored 22 of their 31 points in the paint. Fitzpatrick and DiMagno were the only two players in the scoring column for the Big Red with 11 points apiece.
The Islanders maintained their momentum out of the half to keep the lead. Cornell pulled within eight with 13:30 to play but Texas A&M – Corpus Christi put together an 11-4 run to build a 13-point cushion. During the run the Islanders tacked up 10 fast-break points. The Big Red fought back on a 12-2 run to pull within three but it wasn't enough as time expired.
Roberts, Jammer, Plummer, Taylor and Taryn Gregory all received the starting nod for the Islanders, the first time that starting five has seen the floor together.
The Islanders will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to play TCU on Dec. 29 in the 2012 finale. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m.
