Change in Command for the Local Police Officers Association

The Corpus Christi Police Officers Association's longtime president, Mike Staff, announced Tuesday that he is stepping down and retiring from the police department.

Senior Officer Scott Leeton of the Corpus Christi Police Department will take over for Staff as the head of the Association.

Staff has been with the department more than 20 years, and Association president for nearly six of those years.

"Well, I'm leaving because a good friend of mine has offered me a job and a career opportunity that, quite frankly, was too good to turn down," Staff said. "And the timing seems to be right for my family. It feels like it's the right thing to do."

"I'm ready to jump in. Mike has taken me under his wing since he's made the announcement," Leeton said. "He and I have worked together and he's given me a lot of good info. He's introduced me to a lot of people."

Staff said he will stay connected to law enforcement by serving as a reserve officer.
