Changes Coming to Upcoming First Friday ArtWalks

The last ArtWalk of the summer got underway at La Retama Park Friday night, but some changes could be coming for upcoming ArtWalk that will benefit visitors.

Friday night's ArtWalk featured more lane closures on area streets to make it easier and safer for those who attend, and starting with the Sept. 5 ArtWalk, there will be a park-and-ride bus for visitors.

"Now we're going to have a route that encompasses all our major venues, stopping off at hotels on Shoreline as well to pick up and drop off," said Alan Albin of the Downtown Management District. "And the first stop, the start of the route, is going to be the parking lot on Mann Street. Mesquite and Mann. So there will be a park-and-ride."

Albin said organizers hope to start Corpus Christi First Weekend next spring after a makeover of La Retama Park. That will include ArtWalk on Fridays, a market and music walk in the park on Saturdays, and the Bridgewalk on Sundays. The City's Parks and Recreation Department is expected to begin renovations in November, and the work is expected to last about three months.
