Lots of your neighbors are doing their part to get rid of their Christmas trees the right way this weekend. Tree after tree was dropped off at this Walmart on Greenwood. Volunteers completely filled the back of a dump truck. The organization "Clean City" is behind the recycling effort. There were several volunteers helping out at other locations as well. Organizers say they didn't want people throwing the trees in the trash can, so this was another alternative in order to put them to good use.
Angela Gonzalez with Clean City said, "The trees will go back to the JC Elliot Transfer Station where most of our brush goes, then its grinded in this really huge tub grinder and then we offer that pine mulch to the community and that mulch is really great for South Texas soil, not just in Corpus Christi because its very acidic and it smells really wonderful."
In all, there were more than one thousand Christmas trees collected. If you didn't make it out today, another tree recycling event is scheduled for next Saturday at the Walmart in Flour Bluff and the Walmart on Saratoga from 9am to 3pm. By the way, that mulch should be ready for pickup by next month.
