City Manager Reacts to Firefighters Association's "Puppet Master" Cartoon

The City of Corpus Christi and the Firefighters Association are locked in a heated battle over a new contract, and that battle took a new turn Wednesday after the Association posted a cartoon on its website.

It happened right after the Firefighters Association declared the contract talks were at an impasse. The cartoon depicted City Manager Ron Olson as a puppet master over council members.

"I think the cartoon was extremely demeaning to the council, and I'm sorry that that even happened," Olson said.

Olson said that he is far from being the puppet master. He said that council members are all independent thinkers and no one is pulling their strings. He also said they are his bosses and they direct him, not the other way around.

"The cartoon, it's unfortunate and it's in poor form, but our negotiators will continue to work for an equitable contract and agreement with our firefighters and with our taxpayers," Corpus Christi Mayor Nelda Martinez said.

Olson said that he is ready to get back to the table and try and iron out a contract with the firefighters. The Association said that their attorney would be talking with the City Attorney about that.

As far as the cartoon goes, the Firefighters Association said they did take down the post, but it may go back up soon, along with new cartoons.
