City of San Diego to Select New Police Chief

The City of San Diego will be selecting a new police chief Wednesday night at a City Council Meeting, which begins at 7 p.m.

There are six candidates to choose from. Two of those candidates already work for the City. They are Lieutenant Fernando Garcia and Municipal Court Judge Juan F. Garcia, and both said they have many years of law enforcement experience.

"There's a lot of new ideas that we bring to, we want to bring to the table, as far as getting involved with the community more, with the kids," said Lt. Garcia of the San Diego Police Department. "There's a lot of kids that really are in need of, you know, mentors and things like that."

"Trying to start up the Crime Stoppers program here. We're under the umbrella in Alice, but we want to bring it down here," Judge Garcia said. "Hopefully get that started and get the neighborhood watch program started again."

Whoever is selected will be filling the shoes of John Spillers. Spillers was hired as chief a year ago, but left the department in February to head up the Freer Police Department.
