Coast Guard Hosts Open House for National Safe Boating Week

National Safe Boating Week begins this weekend, and folks over at the U.S. Coast Guard station in Port Aransas are kicking it off with an open house celebration.

"We do have a lot of demonstrations as far as facilities," said Senior Chief Matt Long of the U.S. Coast Guard. "Paddle sport activities; we will also be doing a pyrotechnics demonstration."

They will even have a robot to interact with children. Organizers said they hope the public will walk away with a better understanding of the safety requirements of boats and all around marine safety.

It takes place 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the U.S. Coast Guard station on North Padre Island Drive, near Cotter and Station. The event is free and open to the community.
