Corpus Christi Ties Austin for Homicides This Year

With seven homicides so far this year, Corpus Christi has had as many homicides as the City of Austin.

Corpus Christi is the eighth largest city in Texas, and Austin is the fourth. So does that mean we have the same level of violence as the state's capitol?

Not necessarily, according to two professors at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

"I do believe we did have over 18 homicides last year. I want to say we had 21, which is a slight increase, but if you look back at our data in the 90s, it was even higher than that," said Dr. Melissa Jarrell, associate professor of criminal justice. "Well over 25 homicides. The majority were gang related. So in some respects, you could say things have actually gotten less violent."

Dr. Phillip Rhoades, a professor of criminal justice, said most violent deaths occur when one or both parties is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
