Council Votes Unanimously to Approve Southside Rezoning for "Movies and More"

City Council members voted unanimously on the second reading Tuesday to approve rezoning the area of Staples and Yorktown to allow for the development of the Movies and More entertainment complex.

The vote came after opponents of the development asked that the final vote be tabled. They cited rules that they say prohibits the theater from showing first-run movies within five miles of a competing theater, pointing out that Century 16 is 4.4 miles away.

However, the developer of Movies and More said that distances between theaters are being respected, and that he already has the proper clearances.

During public comment at Tuesday's City Council meeting, two men, including the senior pastor at Asbury United Methodist Church, asked that the City install bollards between the site of the entertainment complex and the church to prevent drivers from breaking through fences and injuring children.
