CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) - Corpus Christ police responded to the Modern Motel in the 3400 block of SPID around noon Saturday after receiving reports of shots fired. An employee told officers the suspect was inside one of the rooms.

Officers surrounded the room the suspect was inside of and evacuated nearby rooms.

The employe told police that he was cleaning rooms after checkout time and had put the suspects belongings in a bag when the suspect arrived at the motel in a black Cadillac. The employee gave the suspect his property and said he had been told by management to have the suspect leave the room since it was past checkout time.

The employee knocked on the door several times with no response from the suspect, and when he tried to unlock it he was unsuccessful because the room was locked from the inside. The employee told the suspect he was going to call the police and as he was walking away, he said he heard six or seven gunshots coming from the room. The employee took cover and called the police.

Officers on the scene continued to evacuate rooms and watch the suspect's room. At around 12:40 p.m., the suspect exited the room naked and was taken into custody without incident. Officers cleared the suspect's room and observed a small semiautomatic pistol on the bed, several bullet holes in the bathroom door and one bullet hole in the wall.

Officers arrested 37-year-old Daniel Leal III and transported him to the City Detention Center.
