Downtown Assault Victim Still Recovering in Local Hospital

It was one week ago that a young man was assaulted on a downtown Corpus Christi street, and that man still remains in very serious condition in a local hospital.

Erik Schwirtlich, 25, was looking for his friends downtown, but what he didn't expect was to be beaten to the ground for running into someone.

Police released surveillance video that showed Schwirtlich walking down Chaparral and Starr streets, looking for his friends, when he accidentally bumped into 23-year old Victor Pedro Perez. In the video, Perez was angry, and responded very violently, punching Erik and sending him to the hospital.

Erik was hit on the side of the head and knocked unconscious. He broke his skull on the left side, and when he fell and hit the ground, he broke the back part of his skull.

On Saturday morning, Schwirtlich went into surgery, and that night he squeezed his grandmothers hand. It was a very big moment for the family.

On Monday, they found out that he had brain damage, and he needs to go to a different facility, either in Houston, San Antonio or Austin, to be treated. The left side of his brain is where he received most of the damage. This has caused the right side of his body to be paralyzed, and he is having trouble speaking.

His family has not left his side. They are trying to stay positive and support Schwirtlich with anything he needs.

"Honest to God, I feel sorry for the kid who did this," said his father, Donnie Schwirtlich. "What could make him so mad about anything, that he wants to, he wanted to, hurt somebody like he did? I don't understand."

Victor Pedro Perez was pulled over during a traffic stop on Wednesday. He was arrested and taken to the Corpus Christi Detention Center, facing charges of aggravated assault.

In 32 days, Erik is expected to coach basketball. The family hopes for a miracle and would love to have him coaching again in time.
