A man was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter Tuesday after police say he struck and killed a man who was working in the grass median of Highway 181 near the Buddy Ganem exit.
Portland police identified the victim as Justin Mazone, one of several workers contracted by the Texas Department of Transportation to weed eat the grass median. Witnesses said a white Nissan Sentra drove into the median and struck Mazone, killing him at the scene, along with the cable barrier and several guard posts. He then drove off along the access road toward Gregory.
A witness followed the driver until police arrived to where the vehicle came to a stop.
Police made contact with the driver, 21-year old Roman Alexander, who told officers that he struck the guardrail but could not explain why his windshield was smashed in and there was blood inside the vehicle. Police say his vehicle was so badly damaged that it had shut itself down, not allowing Alexander to get farther from the scene.
Alexander was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and accident involving death. His blood results are still pending.
