Driver in Serious Condition After Crashing Into Empty School Bus

A 20-year old driver was seriously injured after crashing into a Corpus Christi Independent School District school bus Friday morning.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Alameda and Airline. Witnesses told police that the driver of a black Ford Mustang was speeding when he ran a red light and crashed into the bus.

"For being right at 8 a.m., I don't know where they were headed or coming from, but fortunately there were no children onboard," said Senior Officer Kirk Stowers of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

The impact of the collision sent the Mustang underneath the rear of the bus, and emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to extract the driver from the vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital and is said to be in serious condition, but is expected to survive.

Again, there were no children on the school bus, and the bus driver was uninjured.
