Drop in Temperature Causes Another Bout of Cold-Stunned Turtles

When the temperatures take a dramatic turn to the cold side, one species that gets especially hammered by the change are the sea turtles.

In fact, the folks with the Padre Island National Seashore said they rescued nearly 30 turtles Tuesday morning, most of them found around the Laguna Madre. Rangers at the National Seashore said it has been a particularly brutal winter for the turtles.

"Unfortunately, this has been a long bout of cold stunning this year with the passage of each one of these fronts," said Donna Shaver of the National Seashore. "we've had more turtles that are being found. The turtles have a good prognosis for recovery if they are found and brought to rehabilitation."

If you spot a stranded turtle on the beach, you should call the National Seashore at 361-949-8173.
