ERCOT Warns to Conserve Electricity During Cold Snap

When cold weather strikes, electricity usage often spikes. That's what happened Monday morning, prompting the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to give warning.

ERCOT implemented a Stage 2 alert to protect the power grids, and although they do not expect to implement rotating outages, they are asking that people help keep electricity usage levels to a minimum.

They ask that you keep your thermostat as low as is comfortable, preferably no higher than 68 degrees. Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and appliances, and avoid running large appliances such as washers, dryers and electric ovens during peak energy demand hours, from 6-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.

You should also close shades and blinds at night to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows.
