Event Held to Educate Farmers on Recently Passed Farm Bill

Every five years, congress passes a bundle of legislation, commonly called the "Farm Bill," that sets national agriculture, nutrition, conservation, and forestry policy.

The Agriculture Act of 2014 was signed into law on Feb. 7, 2014, and on Monday, Coastal Bend farmers were briefed about the complex bill that will have a serious impact when comes to their business.

The event was an opportunity for farmers to make plans for next year's crops, and the next five years, especially, when it comes to crop insurance.

One of the people who helped create the new Farm Bill said it will give farmers more options on how to protect themselves and their investments, but some producers believe the bill won't protect them as it has in the past.

The new Farm Bill does not cover the effects of the drought of the past three years.
