Did you know eating the right foods can actually help you fight the flu?

Experts say choosing the right foods can enhance your body's immune system, and also help you fight off illnesses like the flu. On Monday, a local dietitian provided some tips on what items to look for at the grocery store.

"Anything colorful. Those colors have antioxidants that increase immunity such as, you know, red bell peppers, fruits like oranges or like pineapples, anything that has bright colors, and the dark, leafy vegetables," Registered Dietician Sumyo Martinez said. "Any color is good for you."

Here is a list of nine foods that can help boost your immune system, just everyday items that you can find at your local grocery store:

  • Yogurt
  • Oats and Barley
  • Garlic
  • Tea
  • Chicken Soup
  • Fish
  • Beef
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Mushrooms

These foods are said to be high in vitamins and amino acids that contribute to a healthy flu-fighting meal.
