Flour Bluff Residents Contest Rezoning for Bed & Breakfast

Some Flour Bluff residents are contesting a local company's request for a zoning change that would allow a bed and breakfast in their neighborhood.

That request came after the owners were cited by the City for operating a bed and breakfast without a permit.

Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns was at Tuesday's City Council meeting and went Live from that Flour Bluff neighborhood with the details.

Bluff Landing Marina and Lodge, Inc., owns the house at 117 Martha Drive, which is advertised as a bed and breakfast. During Tuesday's City Council meeting, the company had asked that zoning for the neighborhood be changed by special permit to allow it to operate as a bed and breakfast.

Currently, City code defines a bed and breakfast as a private owner occupied residence where you have no more than 10 lodgers.

Members of the Laguna Madre Cove Property Owners Association were on hand to protest the change because they say they don't want a commercial company operating what they call "a party house" in their neighborhood.

"Bluff Landing bought this property and started out right away operating it as a bed and breakfast without a permit," Cliff Schlabach said.

"When we walk out our door, all up and down we see 20 to 30 people over here, having a big party," resident Andy Agan said. "The police have been called twice for parties."

"I just don't see any need at all for them to try to make a bed and breakfast there," resident Rick Stanczak said.

"Who wants to buy a house next to a party house? I mean, it's loud. It's obnoxious," resident Barbara Agan said.

The owner of Bluff Landing, Mike Beers, said that they try to rent to fishermen who utilize the services of the marina in the neighborhood, and they have no intention of violating city code. They believe the property was zoned incorrectly and are asking the City to fix the zoning.

Beers said he has pledged to residents to keep partiers out of the house and will follow whatever regulations the City decides to impose.

The Council voted to table the rezoning request until June 10, and pledged to review City ordinances covering bed and breakfasts before that time.
