Free Program Helps Residents Weatherize Their Homes

With our temperatures set to take another dip this week, here's a question for you: How is your home standing up to the cold temperatures?

Here in South Texas, there is always a need to weatherize, and there is a way to get that done for free. It's actually funded by those extra little fees we pay on our electric bills, and the program is sponsored by AEP Texas.

"Every house can always be more energy efficient," said Jay Salazar, owner of EcoPro Energy Solutions.

Salazar and his company tackle three homes a day, methodically checking for leaks, cracks and holes that allow cool or heated air to escape. The weatherization program is not only meant to save on our cooling and heating costs, but also to help homes become more energy efficient.

Salazar said that all a homeowner needs to call and make an appointment.
"We're going to go in there and we're going to pressurize your duct system. We're going to seal it up. Any leaks, we're going to try to repair. Change out some weather strips. Also seal up any plumbing penetrations, any holes that we might find," Salazar said. "We're going to do all that work, and it's a great program."

Salazar said they need a few days notice to make an appointment before a crew can make it out to your house. Each worker will have a photo ID with the name of the company.
