Freeway Traffic Diverted After Series of Flour Bluff Accidents

Traffic had to be diverted off of SPID in Flour Bluff after a series of major accidents Monday morning.

The first of the accidents involved three vehicles, and happened just before 10 a.m. Traffic investigators said two trucks, were traveling eastbound on the freeway towards the island, crashed after one truck clipped another.

The accident sent one of the trucks into the center divider, causing it to flip before resting on its side. A sport utility vehicle then struck one of the trucks from behind.

Two people were injured in the accident, and both were transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital.

While medics were responding to that accident, another accident happened down the road. It involved a school bus full of kids.

Investigators said the driver of a silver SUV was distracted by the previous accident and crashed right into the school bus.

Several high school students were inside the bus, returning from Del Mar College after a nursing class.

"There were six students on the bus," said Lt. Thomas Nichols of the Corpus Christi Police Department. "I'm sure they are going to be a little sore later on. They were returning from Del Mar as a conjunction from high school there."

Police said the driver of the SUV will be cited for failure to control speed.
