CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - Week 1 of the 2013 High School Playoffs featured lots of local winners. Flour Bluff played its first home playoff game in nearly two years as the Hornets hosted Mercedes. Two quick touchdowns opened the floodgates as the Bluff overpowered Mercedes 61-21.
The Gregory-Portland Wildcats hosted San Antonio Harlandale. Despite a furious second-half rally, G-P came up two points short in a 37-35 loss.
The Alice Coyotes were taken to overtime at Edcouch-Elsa, before winning 28-27 to advance to a showdown with Calallen in round two of the playoffs.
The Calallen Wildcats did their part by blowing out Medina Valley 49-6 as Phil Danaher moved closer to his 400th career win.
