CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - The Carroll Tigers hosted San Antonio Southwest tonight in hopes of improving their playoff hopes in District 28-5A. The Tigers quickly fell behind 21-7, before rallying behind sophomore QB Jesse Jones in a 42-35 win that suddenly has Carroll in second place heading into a showdown with Cibolo Steele next Friday night in San Antonio.
The King Mustangs also picked up a win on Friday night as they ran past South San 33-14. Despite a 2-5 record, King can play its way into the postseason with wins over Southwest and East Central in the final two weeks of the regular season.
The annual "Battle of the Pirates" produced more big plays as Sinton held off Rockport 42-25. The win keeps the Sinton Pirates in the thick of the District 30-3A championship picture. The Rockport Pirates yet join Sinton in the post-season as the #4 playoff team from District 30-4A.
Refugio traveled to Banquete for a game that some preseason observers had circled on the calendar. But the Bulldogs were no match for the Bobcats as Refugio rolled to a 55-7 win.
Woodsboro and Falls City met Friday night in a rare match up of 7-0 teams. The former Class A state champions made quick work of Woodsboro, thanks to a flurry of early Eagle turnovers in a surprisingly one-sided 52-0 win that all but sews up another District 16-2A Division II title for the Beavers.
Orange Grove found the going a lot tougher than expected during the first half of their District 30-3A game at West Oso. The Bulldogs lead 7-6 at the half, before putting up 36 unanswered points in the second half of a 43-6 win.
