Future of New H.M. King High School Auditorium Uncertain

The voter approved $40 million construction project for the new H.M. King High School, located behind the former high school in Kingsville, began in January of last year but recently has hit some financial snags.

Although construction of the new high school has been completed, on Wednesday, crews worked to demolish the old H.M. King High School auditorium. Part of the $40 million construction project was to include the construction of a new auditorium, as well as two FEMA domes that could also serve as gymnasiums. However, the cost of building those domes has exceeded original estimates.

Now, the Kingsville Independent School District board is trying to decided what to do. So far, more than $31 million of the bond money has been spent on the new school's construction, and board members may have to scrap the FEMA domes entirely because they are simply too expensive.

For now, the future of the H.M. King High School auditorium remains uncertain.
