George West Sees Rising Profits from Eagle Ford Shale

Another South Texas town is seeing a big boom in their economy thanks to the activity of Eagle Ford Shale.

City officials in George West are reporting an increase of profits from the local sales tax as the City lowers its property tax rate for its residents.

In August, the City took in more than $76,000. In September, the City took in a little more than $116,000.

It is the first time the city has passed the $100,000 mark in local sales tax profits.

"We attribute a lot of it to the businesses that are doing so well and Eagle Ford Shale," George West Mayor Sylvia Steele said. "That is providing a lot of man power."

The new money goes into the City's general fund. The City is planning to use it to upgrade its parks and work on the streets. That added money is also being used to increase the City's police force.
