Gertie Street Sees More Misfortune as Tree Falls on Home

Curse or coincidence? A tree fells on a house Thursday afternoon, and neighbors were then stung by a swarm of bees living in that tree.

Residents in the 4300 block of Gertie are wondering how another strange incident could have happened just two weeks after a house exploded on the same street.

Just standing here in front of this home at 4325 Gertie, one has to wonder what's going to happen next on this block.

The huge tree came crashing down just after 2 p.m., right on top of a home on 4325 Gertie.

"We were in our backyard, working in our backyard, and we just heard a real loud sound," said Mary Lopez, who lives on Gertie Street. "And we came out front, and this is what we saw."

The Corpus Christi Fire Department and Vector Control went out to take a look at the mess. Fire personnel checked out the damage and made sure no one was hurt, aside from some residents that were stung by bees.

Vector Control was there working to get rid of the swarm of bees, which were apparently living in the bottom of the fallen tree.

It was just over two weeks ago when both of those City departments were out there after the home next door exploded. The resident of that home was severely burned. Vector Control had to get rid of some 3,000 bees which had a hive outside that house.

The good news is that no one was home when the tree took out the front porch.
