Health Fair Provides Information on Diabetes

A community health fair turned the spotlight on diabetes and its causes Thursday.

"The focus is diet, alcohol avoidance, tobacco avoidance and exercise," said Todd Gifford, managing director of MCCI of Texas.

Hundreds of people showed up to the Ortiz Center Thursday morning for the MCCI Humana Health Fair. Participants were able to get free health screenings like blood pressure and sugar level checks, diabetic ulcer checks and most importantly, information about prevention.

"Once we know our levels, we can eat better and exercise more, and elevate levels to a healthy norm," participant Norma Guerrero said. "If we don't, we end up getting sick, and we take more medication, end up in hospital with a stroke or heart attack."

Currently one-in-four Texas senior citizens has type two diabetes.
