Heat, Recent Rains Causing Old City Water Pipes to Break

The city of Corpus Christi has been plagued by water main breaks over the last few days, going from an average of five or six breaks a day to some 30 water main breaks on Monday alone.

Water Department administrators said it's the hot weather combined with a couple of days of rain last week that is causing the water mains to break. Crews had to deal with 15 broken water mains on Saturday, and were working on about 30 broken mains on Monday.

One break appeared on Daytona Monday, and another on Manitou. That one was repaired quickly.

According to the Water Department, the recent rains caused the ground to swell briefly last week. The heat caused the ground to shrink again, breaking the city's old cast iron water pipes.

Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns looked into the problem and went Live from the scene of one of those water main breaks to explain what's happening.
